Participant Comments
At the end of the LEVITY study, researchers interviewed the participants. The following comments are excerpts from actual comments made by participants who were in the group that received all of the LEVITY Program components (light, exercise, vitamins) during the study. They are representative of typical comments made by nearly all of the participants in this group.
"The biggest benefit [of the program] was realizing 'I can do it.' It's empowering that I have some measure of control over how I feel. You can't control what happens to you, but you can control how you feel about it. I am not helpless. I am not without resources. I can find a way to do what I want to do."
"I think the program had a big effect on my life. I feel a lot better than I did before... I stopped a lot of the negative thought patterns. My friends are asking me, 'What happened to you? You seem different.' The LEVITY program was like a springboard that launched me into a more positive way of being."
"I lost about 3 pounds over those 8 weeks [of the study]. The experience has been very positive for me and made me number one."
"I think [the study] has given me some structure, some strength to just go ahead and do what I've known was probably good for me to do anyway. And it has helped me to just take the action to make the walks, the outdoor activity and the vitamins every single day a part of my life. My doctor suggested medication, but I wasn't interested in drugs. I'm the kind of person who would like to be in control of it, more action-oriented."
"It's really been quite a change... sex is more interesting, too. And it's very surprising to me... We're rediscovering each other."
"I'm a little more alert, a little more excited about what's going on at work... My overall stress level is down, definitely down. And my attitude. Now I know I can make a change. I can do things! I don't have to just be in this rut where I eat at McDonalds every day... I can get out and I can walk."
"I found the program very easy to do. I learned that I'm capable of change, which is a good thing. And I don't have to be negative all the time. It used to be really easy to talk myself into a really bad mood. It's been a huge difference! I was talking to my mom about the study, about feeling kind of depressed, she said, 'Oh, we all have that. It's in the family.' I'm glad that I can finally do something about it. We can make changes and we can make ourselves better."
"My mood has changed very much to the positive. I've noticed that my language is much more positive. I wake up refreshed, not worried... My metabolism has lifted. I think that's why I'm sleeping better... I want to get out and do things. The [study] helped me focus, concentrate better on my work. I love knowing that I didn't take any medicine to feel like that."
"I thought the program was an easy pleasure... it doesn't take much time really to lift you up and make you feel really good... my mood changed to the positive, and I felt stronger."
"I think the main effect of this program has been empowerment. I think it was very empowering to see there are things you can do to promote your own wellness. My mood has been so positive. Also, I lost five pounds, which I thought was wonderful, because I wasn't really on a diet."
"Before the program, I was only spending about 12 minutes a day outside. I had no idea I was that light-deprived. Taking the vitamins is easy, and I've already increased the light in my life. Now I am stronger, more endurance, more stamina, more energetic. I've become a physically active, healthier person."
